ZUGSPITZE

The highest mountain in Germany, and is on the borders of Germany and Austria.
I first learned how to ski on this mountain, in 1960.  Back then, the only way to
get to the top of the mountain was to take a cog train up through a tunnel* to a
hotel perched on the cliff side of the top.  The view from there was magnificent
but the slope looked like it was straight down from the terrace.  What a place to
learn how to ski.  Being only twenty, I was a bit foolhardy and shoved off down the
slope.  Fortunately, the only thing I broke that first day was a ski.

*I heard that the cog train I had taken back in the early 1960's caught fire a couple
months ago, and resulted in many skiers being burnt to death inside the tunnel.
