I first was on the continent of Africa in the Fall of 1960,
while on duty with the US Army. My little branch of the Army had a
couple bases there. One of them was on a plateau outside of Asmara, Ethiopia (now
called Eritrea), and another at Wheelus Air Force Base in Libya. Things
were different in those days: to go on safari meant actually shooting
something. Fortunately for those of you reading this that are of the
politically correct genre and for those of you ever so vitally concerned
about endangered species and their eminent demise, I never even saw anything to
shoot at, much less hit.
I have returned to Africa a couple times since
for a boat trip up the Nile River
to Lake Victoria, and for a photo safari to the game preserves in central
Africa. Africa is a huge continent and highly diverse
in geography, cultures, and things to see and do. One could spend the rest
of one's life exploring new things there. I am planning on
returning in the near future to see and experience more of that wonderful land
they call the "Dark Continent". Following are areas that I have
some photos of:
However, if you want to see some truly
impressive photos of Africa and it's many countries, I would suggest visiting
the following web site. The photographer, Gary Cook, is a professional and
really has some excellent photos. When viewing is completed, return to
